Vintage Pokémon card values: what your 1999 cards are really worth
Vintage in Pokémon usually means the WOTC era, roughly 1999 to 2003 — Base Set through the Neo and e-Card releases. Age alone means nothing here. What matters is which printing you have, what condition it survived in, and whether the card had demand in the first place.
Where your card sits
1st Edition (1999)
The stamp on the left of the artwork. The scarcest and strongest tier, especially on holos from Base Set, Jungle and Fossil.
Shadowless
No drop shadow to the right of the art box, thinner font. Sits between 1st Edition and Unlimited and is often missed by sellers.
Unlimited
The mass print run. Holos still hold value in high grade; commons and uncommons largely do not.
Neo, Gym and e-Card era
Lower print runs than Base Set on some releases, and notoriously hard to grade well — high grades can outperform expectations.
What moves the price
Printing identification
Check the shadow, the stamp, the copyright year and the set symbol before anything else. Two visually identical cards can differ by an order of magnitude.
Condition after 25 years
Most vintage was played with. Edge whitening on the blue backs, corner wear and surface scuffs are the norm, and they dominate the price.
Holo vs non-holo
Value concentrates in holos and a small number of key non-holos. Vintage commons are usually bulk regardless of year.
Grading economics
Fees are fixed, so grading only makes sense above a value threshold and when the card is genuinely clean. We will tell you where the line sits for your cards.

- How do I know if my Pokémon cards are 1st Edition?
- Look for a small black 1st Edition stamp on the left side of the artwork, below the picture. No stamp means Shadowless or Unlimited — check the drop shadow next.
- Are all 1999 Pokémon cards valuable?
- No. A played 1999 common is worth cents. Value sits in holos, 1st Edition and Shadowless printings, and high-grade copies of desirable cards.
- What is a Shadowless card?
